Maps & Globes

Here are the book bags for my Maps & Globes unit. There are 8 book bags each containing a list of guided reading questions (pre reading, during reading, and post reading) and a culminating activity. The books range in level from about a level D to a level M . I use these book bags as partner work but you could use them in small groups, or pick one to use for a whole group lesson.

There is also a formal lesson plan included that is aligned to the Common Core Standards for 1st Grade. I taught this as a two day project. Day one was read and pull out key terms and answer basic understanding questions. Day two was re read, map project, and present new information to classmates.

Germs Germs Germs

With each unit I teach I have created a group of 2-10 book bags to help guide students through the text and learn more about the social studies or science theme. The guide asks students to look at the the pictures, find vocabulary and answer some comprehension questions. These 3 book bags are on germs.

Germs Germs Germs students could choral read. Germs Make Me Sick is a harder text (2.8) and will be used as a read aloud in my room. The Germ Busters is also a harder text and will be used a a read aloud in my room.

Just completed our maps and globes unit. I took two weeks to teach about cardinal directions, the difference between a map and a globe and how and why we might use a map. If we had the time my class would have loved to just lay on the rug and play with maps and globes all day. They were incredibly interested in where things were and how long it might to take to get there.

Scout Letters- I received 2 scouts (similar to Flat Stanley)from a 3rd grade class in MPLS. My class was curious about how they got to us, how far they had to travel etc. Each child wrote a letter back to the third graders about our town and community and drew a map showing how the scout got to us.

Dolch Sequence

Game board, pieces, and playing cards.

Students play following traditional sequence rules. Students take turns playing their cards and reading the words to try to get a sequence of 4 in a row.

Word Family Worksheets

Race to Read

Race to Read is a letter identification game. Students take turns rolling a die and identifying the letters in the corresponding line. Students can identify the letter name, sound or both. This can also be used as an assessment tool. Good practice for timed letter identification standardized or district testing.

Great Resource!!!!

A former teacher's blog. Has a TON of great printables. I have used the sight word books as well as the word family books. The books are short and sweet. Great for book bags/boxes as well as reading groups.
